I definitely have my times to indulge in cookies and ice cream (the bad kind) when I am in the mood for it, but there always comes a point when my body really needs a break from the sugar, and it really needs some valuable nutrients; like the nutrients in this Chocolate Antioxidant Smoothie Bowl.

first of all, what are antioxidants?

At first, “antioxidant” was just a word to me. If someone told me to buy a product because it has antioxidants in it, and told me that it’s good for my body, I’d be like, “ok!”, but, I also wanna know how they are good for my body.

An article by Very Well Fit says that antioxidants are substances that can help your heart health, lower the risk of infections, and even lower the risk of some forms of cancer.

More specifically explained in another article by Nutrex Hawaii, our body can’t keep up with producing the right amount of antioxidants, so weaving foods with antioxidants into our diet can help our body stay at a good level; this way, we can benefit from their cancer-fighting, infection-killing superpowers. YAY.

There are two ingredients in this smoothie bowl recipe that are major sources of antioxidants,

-> dark chocolate, and blueberries

In an article about 7 Proven Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate by Healthline, I learned about ORAC -> oxygen radical absorption capacity -> a measurement of antioxidant activity in certain foods; dark chocolate turns out to rank “amongst the highest-scoring foods that have been tested”.

And, of corse, what’s one of the other highest ranking foods for antioxidant activity? Blueberries, so they’re also an antioxidant MVP.

Chocolate Antioxidant Smoothie Bowl

Just the right amount of chocolatey goodness and healthful nutrients.

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 oz. vegan dark chocolate chips/chunks
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/4 cup oats
  • 1 cup almond milk


  1. Blend all Ingredients together, pour into a bowl, and decorate with whatever ingredients you like (like more chocolate... I mean, blueberries).  

Not only is this smoothie bowl yummy and chocolatey, it’s also a powerhouse of antioxidants, as well as other nutrients.
